Buying a car without checking its tires is like marrying someone without asking if they snore. — Chase Jordan - Ask me how I know!

Why Tire Condition Can Make or Break a Used Car Deal (and What to Look For)

🚙 Tires Are the First Clue to a Car’s Story

Tires aren’t just round black rubber.

They tell a story—about how the car was driven, maintained, and even whether the seller is hiding something.

In this post, we’ll break down how to assess tire condition like a pro—and how those four little circles can help you dodge a lemon and drive off with confidence.

🔍 What to Check (and What It Means)

1. Tread Depth

  • Use a penny or tread gauge.

  • Less than 4/32"? Plan for new tires—soon.

  • Uneven wear = alignment or suspension issues.

📌 Deal Guard Pro tip: New tires cost $600–$1,200+ depending on the car. Use that to negotiate!

2. Uneven Wear Patterns

  • Inner edge worn more than outer? Probably alignment issues.

  • Cupping or feathering? Could mean suspension or shock problems.

  • Center wear? Overinflation.

  • Edge wear? Underinflation or poor alignment.

🚨 Uneven wear = hidden mechanical problem alert. Check google images for each if confused on what to look for or go into your local tire store, they have good pictures, snap a pic of it. Thank the shop peeps for their help!

3. Tire Age

  • Look for the DOT code on the sidewall: last four digits show the manufacture date.

  • Example: “3720” = made in the 37th week of 2020.

  • Older than 6 years?

!!!! They may look fine, but rubber degrades with age—especially in extreme climates.

4. Tire Brand and Type

  • Matching brands on all four tires = a good sign.

  • Mismatched or off-brand tires = cost-cutting or accident repairs.

  • High-quality brands (Michelin, Goodyear, Continental) suggest proper maintenance.

  • If the brands are mixed, I had to do that once on a vehicle that has larger tires in the back than the front and discontinued size was the issue. At a minimum, get two the same in the back and two the same in the front. Very easy to explain for an older car.

5. Spare Tire Condition

  • Does the car have one?

  • Is it inflated?

  • Is the jack and wrench in the trunk?

  • Rusted? Bent? Triple check everything!

Too many buyers forget to check until they’re stuck on the side of the road.

❌ Common Mistakes Buyers Make

  • Looking only at the tread, not age or wear pattern ( many tires, if they are too old, cannot be fixed if they get a flat. A new one will be needed - ask me how I know! :)

  • Ignoring mismatched brands or bald spare

  • Assuming “it passed inspection” means the tires are fine - secret.... I does not!

  • Not factoring in the cost of immediate tire replacement

Tires might not be flashy, but they’re expensive—and negotiation gold when you know what to look for.
